I also doubt BASIL did this intentionally, it was likely a result of little foresight and having been put on the spot by KEL. Surprise! Johnny Depp actually plays Young Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” The result of these experiments led to defining the processes of learning optimism. Using his knowledge about conditioning people to be helpless in the lab, he shifted his focus to conditioning people to be optimists. Seligman shifted his focus to attempting to discover what it is that keeps some people from ever becoming helpless. He noticed that, while some subjects blamed themselves for negative outcomes, others blamed the experiment for setting them up to fail. As he was performing tests to study helplessness further, he began to wonder why some people resisted helplessness-conditioning. Seligman came to the concept of learned optimism through a scientific study of learned helplessness, the idea that a certain reoccurring negative event is out of the person's control. Optimists also quickly internalize positive events while pessimists externalize them. Optimists are therefore generally more confident. ![]() Personalization: Optimists blame bad events on causes outside of themselves, whereas pessimists blame themselves for events that occur.Optimistic people also allow good events to brighten every area of their lives rather than just the particular area in which the event occurred. Pervasiveness: Optimistic people compartmentalize helplessness, whereas pessimistic people assume that failure in one area of life means failure in life as a whole.Optimists point to specific temporary causes for negative events pessimists point to permanent causes. They also believe good things happen for reasons that are permanent, rather than seeing the transient nature of positive events. Permanence: Optimistic people believe bad events to be more temporary than permanent and bounce back quickly from failure, whereas others may take longer periods to recover or may never recover.Other differences exist between pessimists and optimists in terms of explanatory style: The optimist's outlook on failure can thus be summarized as "What happened was an unlucky situation (not personal), and really just a setback (not permanent) for this one, of many, goals (not pervasive)". ![]() The resulting optimism-one that grew from pessimism-is a learned optimism. Seligman invites pessimists to learn to be optimists by thinking about their reactions to adversity in a new way. Pessimism, on the other hand, is much more common pessimists are more likely to give up in the face of adversity or to suffer from depression. The benefits of an optimistic outlook are many: Optimists are higher achievers and have better overall health. Learned optimism was defined by Martin Seligman and published in his 1990 book, Learned Optimism. In contrast with learned helplessness, optimism is learned by consciously challenging any negative self talk. Learned optimism is the idea in positive psychology that a talent for joy, like any other, can be cultivated. ![]() JSTOR ( March 2012) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message).Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. Example 1 shows the letter names used for the lines of a staff when a treble clef is employed. The treble clef is one of the most commonly used clefs today. Memorizing the patterns for each clef will help you read music written for different voices and instruments. The alto clef is primarily used for the viola, a mid-ranged instrument, while the tenor clef is sometimes employed in cello, bassoon, and trombone music (although the principal clef used for these instruments is the bass clef).Įach clef indicates how the lines and spaces of the staff correspond to pitch. The bass clef is usually utilized for lower voices and instruments, such as a bassoon, cello, trombone, or bass voice. The treble clef is typically used for higher voices and instruments, such as a flute, violin, trumpet, or soprano voice. In the next chapter, The Keyboard and the Grand Staff, we will see that having multiple clefs makes reading different ranges easier. A clef indicates which pitches are assigned to the lines and spaces on a staff. The Notation of Notes, Clefs, and Ledger Lines chapter introduced four clefs: treble, bass, alto, and tenor. These theorists used more than seven letters of the Greek alphabet to name pitches. For example, some ancient Greek music theorists did not accept octave equivalence. More information about this concept can be found in the next chapter, The Keyboard and the Grand Staff. ![]() This loop of letter names exists because musicians and music theorists today accept what is called octave equivalence, or the assumption that pitches separated by an octave should have the same letter name. After G these letter names repeat in a loop: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C, etc. On the guitar, we only use the treble clef.In Western musical notation, pitches are designated by the first seven letters of the Latin alphabet: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. It’s a meeting place!Īs this clef shows the lowest notes, on the piano it represents what you should play with your left hand, while the treble clef shows what you should play with your right hand.įor this reason, piano scores usually have two staves (one for each clef) simultaneously, since we can play with both hands at the same time. Notice that in the Bass clef there is the same C that you saw represented in the Treble clef (Central C). On the piano, the location of the octaves is as follows in this key: By knowing this, we can write the remaining notes: Here, the symbol is drawn from the 4th line onwards and indicates that on this line you will find the F note. The Bass Clef (or F-clef) follows the same logic as the Treble Clef, but the location of the notes is a little different. The lowest bass octaves in a piano do not have correspondence on the staff of the treble clef. |
